You’re Not Crazy: and Other Encouraging Words Every Mystic Needs to Hear
If you could travel back in time and have a heart-to-heart talk with yourself, what wisdom would you impart? You’re Not Crazy: and Other Encouraging Words Every Mystic Needs to Hear is an unfinished collection of intimate letters Victoria Lantz wrote to herself addressing the uncertainty and fear she encountered along the mystic path. The prayerful letters offer encouragement to aspiring mystics and all spiritual seekers who long for a gentle voice of tenderness and compassion on what can be a isolating spiritual journey.
This book is my most vulnerable work to date, although it certainly wasn’t born that way. When the idea for the project came to me, I anticipated the book would be an aseptic guide for aspiring mystics, perhaps titled Mysticism for Dummies or similar. But fairly quickly into the creation process, I realized the book was going to be a collection of intimate letters written to myself. This realization stalled the process for several weeks, given I was terrified to open that part of my heart not only to others, but also to myself.
If I could travel back in time and have a heart-to-heart talk with myself, what wisdom would I impart? The early stages of a mystic’s path are often filled with uncertainty and fear, as was mine. I was regularly desperate for comfort, support, and encouragement, but without someone safe to confide in. In response to this unmet need, I wrote letters to myself, addressing situations where I had trouble discerning truth amidst mind clutter and emotional turmoil. Filled with tenderness and compassion, the prayerful writing provided a gentle reminder that I wasn’t crazy, my feelings were valid, and the panic would eventually pass. It was a healing ritual and I referred to the letters often.
This book is primarily for me, as is all of my creative expression. Bringing things to life is an integral part of my healing, the daily work in discovering who I was created to be. And nothing transforms me like telling stories, especially telling my own stories to myself.
Peace, love, and all good to you.
