One Thorn: My Story of Emotional Abuse

One thorn of experience is worth a whole wilderness of warning.
– James Russell Lowell

Emotional abuse snuck up on me. I didn’t see it coming and didn’t recognize the signs when it arrived. Leaving behind no visible bruises or scars, I didn’t realize I’d been victimized until the damage was done.

Did my mystic temperament make me an easy target? I’ve been accused of naivety and innocently seeing the best in people, but I considered this an asset, not a liability. Everything glows with Divinity, especially the ones you fall in love with, when you’ve had a spiritual awakening.

Perhaps being a mystic does make me susceptible to emotional abuse, but don’t mistake my vulnerability for weakness.

Together, my courage and my very wounded heart give me the toughest kind of strength there is.
